How To Forgive Yourself For The Version Of You That Didn't Know Better

Sometimes healing begins the moment you stop judging the person you used to be.

Growth is not about pretending the past never happened.

It's about understanding that the version of you who made those decisions did not have the awareness, tools, experience, or perspective you have today.

In this powerful Season 5 opener, Daniel "ThaBudd" Nelson and Marcus explore the process of self-forgiveness, healing, recovery, identity evolution, and personal growth.

Together they examine how shame, regret, and self-judgment can keep us trapped in old stories long after we've changed.

0:00 Welcome to Absolutely Focused Radio Season 5, Episode 1, How to forgive yourself for the version of you that didn't know Better, featuring Daniel and Marcus, the motivator. If you've ever replayed a mistake, if you've ever judged your past, if you've ever felt stuck in something you already survived, this episode is for you.

0:45 Stay focused. Marcus, quick question for you. If the version of you from your hardest season walked into this room right now, would you shake his hand? Would you thank him for surviving? Or would you judge him? Listener, I'm asking you to. That's heavy. Most people are still angry at a version of themselves who didn't have today's awareness. That's like being mad at your old phone for not running the newest update. It didn't have the patch yet.

1:27 Exactly. You don't smash the phone, you install the upgrade. But when it comes to our cells, we treat 1 error like total system failure. Let's slow this down for a second, because this next part matters. When you replay a mistake over and over, your brain activates its stress circuits. Stress increases emotional reactivity, and when emotional reactivity goes up, clear decision making goes down.

2:15 South Shame basically puts your brain in airplane mode. You're still functioning, but you're disconnected from clarity. Exactly, and if someone has struggled with drinking, stress plus shame can increase craving cycles not because they're weak, but because the nervous system is overloaded. Listener quick system check. Are you healing or are you replaying error logs?

2:59 Let's go anatomy. The liver filters toxins, and here's something powerful. The liver regenerates. It rebuilds. That's the metaphor right there. Your body is designed to recover. Your identity is not the one part of you that's frozen in time. If your liver can regenerate, why can't your mindset? Motivation. Fact. Your body believes in recovery more than your inner critic does.

3:40 Let's make forgiveness practical. Here's the upgrade path. One, name What happened? Honestly. Two separate behavior from identity 3 Extract the lesson. 4 Release the label. 5 Set a new standard. Forgiveness is not a feeling, it's a sequence. That's not denial, that's growth. Forgiveness doesn't mean you excuse it, it means you refuse to live inside it.

4:28 If you keep reopening the same error message without installing the fix, that's not reflection, that's rumination. Stop rereading the same emotional e-mail from 2018. Unsubscribe from your own Shame newsletter. If this conversation is resonating, take a moment right now. Subscribe. Like, share this episode with someone who needs it.

5:12 Someone you love is carrying the same weight you're releasing right now. Growth multiplies when you pass it forward. And now back to the conversation. Let's talk hard. Shame says I am bad. Growth says I was learning. Listen, if you truly didn't know better, then what exactly are you still punishing yourself for?

5:53 And who taught you that punishment was the only path to growth? When you come back in a month, will your answer be the same? You didn't know what you didn't know that version of. You made decisions with the awareness available at the time. Every sober day is a software update. Every lesson learned is a patch installed. Every moment of awareness is a new line of code rewriting your future. The brain rewires, the heart adapts, the liver regenerates.

6:38 Technology updates. Why are you the only thing not allowed to evolve? You are not your worst decision, you are your current direction. If you didn't know better then and you know better now, what will you choose tomorrow? Because tomorrow is the only place your power actually lives. Let that sit. This episode discusses personal growth and behavioral patterns for educational purposes only.

7:25 It is not medical or psychological diagnosis or treatment. If you are struggling with substance use or mental health concerns, please seek professional support. I release who I was. I honor what I learned. I move forward stronger. I forgive the version of me that didn't know better, because that version survived long enough for me to become this one. Absolutely focused Radio season 5 Episode 1 How to forgive yourself for the version of you that didn't know better.

8:18 Stay focused, stay growing, and as always, stay awesome with purpose. Grounded and clear ain't running from the past. I'm just shifting the gear. If you feel disconnected, just know you're not broke. Sometimes healing starts with a single reboot.

9:00 My mind was an air dream. One just connect. Dishonest, but I went back on my back.
